A new Costco Wholesale Warehouse may be headed for Coralville.
Construction bids are being requested by a Seattle construction company for a new Costco Wholesale Warehouse at 2900 Heartland Drive in Coralville.
The bid specifications issued by by Jackson Dean Construction of Seattle call for construction to begin June 27 and for the project to be completed on Nov. 12.
The request for bids on Jackson Dean’s web site call for a 617-stall covered parking garage and a 154,391-square-foot building to be created from the renovation of two existing shell buildings. A freestanding gas station is also covered by a separate request for bids.
The 24.7 acre site on Heartland Drive currently has a 410,000 square foot warehouse building constructed in 1992, according to Johnson County Assessor’s Office records, which list the Russell A. Gerdin Recovable Trust as the deed holder. It was formerly used as a distribution facility by Amana Refrigeration, and is locally known as the Amana warehouse because of the company name that once marked the building.
SourceMedia reported Costco was exploring Coralville as a site for one of the company’s warehouse stores in March. The nearest Costco store is in Des Moines. However planning and zoning administrator Jim Kessler said the property would need a zoning change from its current industrial zoning.
Costco founder and chairman Jeff Brotman said through a spokesman that the company does not comment on specific markets.
For those of you who have no experience with Costco, here are some facts I know. Myself being a frequent customer in Chicago.
1. To differentiate between Sam’s Club. Think of Costco in the same light as Target vs. Walmart.
2. In my opinion, Costco is more organized than Sam’s and has a better variety.
3. Costco has it’s own generic brand “Kirkland”.
4. Costco gasoline usually is 10 cents under other prices.
