The newest installment of the Grand Theft Auto series, Grand Theft Auto V, is a blockbuster hit—breaking numerous game records as it becomes the best-selling game of all time. Based on the very popular Grand Theft Auto (2004 version) the game sees players take on the roles of several different characters (protagonists) as they explore Los Santos and its suburbs, trying to stay one step ahead of the law, and commit as many crimes as they can. In between the story missions, players can also participate in a large array of side-missions that offer a variety of ways to make quick money online, aside from what is already being handled by the main narrative.

When it comes to video game sales on the Xbox One, Grand Theft Auto V is unquestionably the best-selling game of all time. As of January 20th, 2018 it has sold over 67.5 million copies worldwide, making it the best-selling game of all time on the Xbox One and Playstation 4. This is a remarkable feat, considering that it was released in April of 2017 and was not originally scheduled for release on the platforms in question until September of 2017.
It is also the most popular game on the Xbox One according to the most recent NPD report, boasting an average daily usage rate of 28.8 hours as of December 31st, 2017. This makes it the longest-serving game on the market in terms of average daily usage at the time of the report.
Why Is It So Popular?
Grand Theft Auto V is a landmark game in several ways. Firstly, it is a return to form for the series, which had started to decline in quality after Grand Theft Auto III (2001). Grand Theft Auto III is the game that introduced the series’ first-person shooter (FPS) mechanics. And while it is extremely popular, Grand Theft Auto III also introduced numerous bugs and glitches into the series that have not been fully fixed even 7 years later. The game also marks the first time that Rockstar North, the company that created the Grand Theft Auto series, has partnered with a third-party developer to bring the game to market.
Along with the new mechanics, the updated graphics and improved overall gameplay, Grand Theft Auto V sees the return of several popular characters from the series’ earlier years, including Claude, Trevor, and Michael. How Does It Work?

Players can also make money through the in-game ‘Marketing Department’, which allows them to perform certain tasks for advertisers. For example, you can look for jobs in the marketing department that will pay you to take out ads for various businesses, or you can develop products for advertisers to promote, earn revenue through in-app purchases, and then use the profits to further your criminal exploits.
The Biggest Successes And Most Popular Game Modes
It is worth noting that while Grand Theft Auto V is undoubtedly the largest success of the Grand Theft Auto series, it is not the first. In fact, it was followed by Grand Theft Auto IV (which was released in 2008), and then followed by another Grand Theft Auto game, Grand Theft Auto: Epilogue (2010). These three games are often referred to as the ‘Trilogy of Power’. While all three games were critical and commercial successes, it was Grand Theft Auto IV that saw the largest audience, with over 43 million copies sold as of 2017.
